Close yuh eyes and try this with a bank. Yuh read a piece that hit yuh, decide it was worth JMD 13, and want the writer to have it before the browser tab closes. No card machine. No form. No account to create. No platform taking a cut and paying the writer next quarter if the balance passes some threshold. If yuh have ever tried to send a stranger thirteen dollars on a weekend, yuh know the banks would need three business days and a reason. A zap does it in about the time it takes yuh thumb to leave the screen.
Weh a zap actually is
A zap is a Lightning tip welded to a Nostr note, and it is the first internet-native way to pay a stranger a compliment that arrives as money. Nostr is the open social protocol this blog also posts on, and the zap design lives in proposal number 57, NIP-57 for short. It defines two event types. A zap request, and a zap receipt. And here is a small easter egg fi di tech-minded. The receipt event is kind 9735, because 9735 is the default network port that Lightning nodes speak on. The number family matches on purpose.
When yuh zap a note, the receipt gets published to relays like any other note, so a tip is not a private transfer. It is public proof, visible to anybody, that real money actually moved. An applause yuh can audit.
Di plumbing in four steps, no jargon
- Your wallet asks the other side fi an invoice, using the Lightning address protocol, the same standard behind addresses that look like an email.
- An invoice comes back saying exactly how many sats and fi who.
- You confirm, and the sats leave yuh wallet over the Lightning Network, settling in seconds fi routing fees that are typically well under one percent.
- The receiver's wallet publishes the zap receipt to the relays, and the applause shows up under the note.
Four steps, and the only one yuh actually perform is step three. Di rest is the machines talking to each other, which is how plumbing should work.
Di money math, no calculator
One bitcoin is one hundred million sats, and that split can never change, because it is fixed in the code the way twenty-one million is fixed in the code. The price is the part that moves, so do the sums fresh. At today's rate, one bitcoin is about US$80,325, which at the current exchange rate is roughly JMD 12,762,000. Divide by a hundred million and one sat works out to about thirteen Jamaican cents. So a 100-sat zap is roughly JMD 13. A 1,000-sat zap is roughly JMD 128. Flip it around and JMD 100 is about 784 sats, while JMD 1,000 is about 7,836 sats. And the classic move, the 21-sat tip that nods to the twenty-one million cap, is about JMD 3. Di JMD numbers will drift with the market. The hundred-million split will not.
Try it right yah so
This blog runs a live tip jar, and it is the full lesson from this article in one button. Hit the tip link on any page. If yuh have a browser wallet like the Alby extension, WebLN lets it pay in one click. If yuh have any Lightning wallet pon yuh phone, scan di QR code right here. Di minimum is one sat, so a 21-sat test zap costs about JMD 3, and it proves the whole rail end to end before yuh ever send a serious amount.
Di tip jar Lightning address, plain as day: [email protected]. Type it inna any wallet weh know Lightning address, no card, no form, no company inna di middle. Or skip di typing an scan di code:
One more detail worth knowing. The tip jar does not run through some company's server. It runs through our own Alby Hub, on our own Lightning node, the same self-custody setup we write about. When yuh zap this blog, you are paying a node in di yard, not an office abroad.
Value fi value, not di ad machine
Di old internet paid writers through ads, which meant the writer worked for the algorithm, the algorithm worked for the advertiser, and the reader was the product being sold. Di zap model flips it. The reader decides what a piece was worth, sends exactly that, and the money lands whole, with no dashboard to unlock and no quarter to wait. Our posts get zapped the same way on Nostr, note by note, by readers who liked what they read.
It is the higgler economy wi grew up pon, digital. Money moves when value moves, straight from hand to hand, and the middleman gets skipped.
Skip di machine. Pay di writer. One zap, one receipt.
