Every Jamaican knows a family like this. Land cleared by a grandparent, planted by two generations after, house pon it, memories on it, and when the day comes to borrow against it or pass it on, the answer comes back the same every time. There is no title. The family owns the land the way a bird owns a nest. They live in it, they built it, they would fight for it, and on paper, in the register that the system actually respects, it does not exist.

Roughly four in every ten occupied land parcels in Jamaica sit exactly like that, according to the 2021 estimate that started the current push for land adjudication. Around 330,000 untitled properties, and a study from the same period estimated about 20% of the population, some 600,000 people, living in informal settlements. Five years of titling programmes later, the gap is still enormous.

Here is the ting though. We took that exact problem, looked straight at it, and then turned around and did the same thing to wi money.

Di land office lock fi twelve year

In February 2014, a Tokyo exchange called Mt Gox collapsed. At its peak it handled around 70% of all bitcoin transactions on Earth, which made it the land office of the whole industry. And then it announced that about 850,000 BTC, worth roughly US$450 million at the time, was gone. The people who kept their coins on file there discovered what a filing cabinet fire means for a deed. The loss is history. The part that is still happening is the wait. Twelve years on, creditors are still collecting their own money back in court-drip instalments, under trustee deadlines that keep extending. Some of them will be old men by the time the last payment clears, if it clears. Their bitcoin was safe the whole time, technically. Just not theirs to touch.

FTX, di land office get rob from inside

Then November 2022 showed the version that is worse. FTX was one of the biggest exchanges in the world, a household name with celebrity ads and stadium logos. When it collapsed, about US$8 billion in customer money was missing, routed out the back door into the founder's own trading firm while customers were told their funds were safe. The founder is now serving 25 years in a federal prison. The customers are standing in the same line the Mt Gox crowd has been standing in for over a decade.

Nobody's land got seized in either case. What got seized was the office that held the paperwork. If yuh money lives in somebody else's office, yuh money is one bankruptcy, one bad quarter, or one bad actor away from a line that moves at the speed of a court calendar.

Di seed phrase is di deed

The educator Andreas Antonopoulos, the man who first said "not your keys, not your coins" at a talk in 2017, spent years before that explaining the same idea in longer sentences. When yuh hold bitcoin yuhself, the deed is a seed phrase, twelve or twenty-four words generated by yuh wallet. Those words ARE the title. Whoever holds dem, holds the money. Whoever doesn't, cannot touch it. Not a company, not a court, not a hacker who breaches an exchange.

The levels are simple. A custodial app, where somebody else holds the words, is land held on trust. A non-custodial wallet pon yuh phone, Flash built on the Breez SDK is one, means yuh hold the words and the phone is just the reader. Zeus goes further and connects straight to yuh own Lightning node. Bigger amounts deserve a hardware wallet, a dedicated device whose only job is signing, because a general purpose phone has a browser, and browsers are where thieves live.

Storm-tested rules fi di deed

Ask anybody who lost a roof in Melissa where the important papers ended up. Paper survives storms better than electronics do, and the rules are short.

  1. Write the words pon paper. Never photograph dem, never type dem into a website, never say them aloud to anybody from "support". Real support never asks.
  2. Two copies, two places far apart. Fire, flood and storm do not respect one location, so a deed two parishes away from di house is the deed that still exists when the house doesn't.
  3. Keep one copy sealed against water. A dry bag costs less than a phone.
  4. Test the recovery once a year. A deed yuh have never read back is a deed yuh cannot swear by.

Wi run wi own tip jar pon wi own node

Practice what wi preach. The tip jar pon this very site runs through our own Alby Hub, on our own Lightning node, and the seed phrase is not sitting in anybody's office but ours. It is a small ting with small amounts in it, and it still runs by the same rule the big money should run by. Hold di deed yuhself.

Jamaica's land crisis is a hundred years deep and will take decades to untangle, because land offices are slow and history is heavy. Yuh money does not have to join that line. The deed for it is twelve words, it prints in a minute, and it fits in a dry bag.

Yuh land need paper. Yuh money need words. Hold both deeds yuhself.
